Harlem Pride And Allies Unite Against Censorship Legislation

December 13, 2024

Harlem Pride has united with over two dozen organizations, including the ACLU and Equality New York, in a coalition to oppose the deceptively named Kids Online Safety Act.

The coalition is expressing concerns that the legislation could restrict access to essential online resources for marginalized communities, especially LGBTQ+ youth.

In a letter addressed to Democratic leaders Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn), the coalition highlights that KOSA’s “duty of care” provision is vaguely worded and could empower federal agencies to arbitrarily limit access to critical information. The coalition emphasizes that online platforms serve as vital lifelines for LGBTQ+ youth, offering support and information often unavailable in their local communities. The letter states, “These online communities keep LGBTQ+ youth informed, connected, and in many cases, alive.”

“… disproportionately affect youth …”

The coalition also raises concerns that KOSA could force platforms to remove content related to sexual orientation, gender identity, reproductive healthcare, and the history of marginalized groups to avoid potential politicized legal penalties. This could disproportionately affect youth in states with existing restrictions on reproductive health access and LGBTQ+ rights.

“… a safe environment for our youth.”

The coalition’s letter concludes with a call to action: “We all want the internet to be a safe environment for our youth. We urge you to ensure that attempts to create safer spaces for young people do not work against everyone’s access to valuable information.”
