Harlem Non-Profits Receive The Northern Manhattan Fellowship

east-harlem1Twenty members of The Northern Manhattan Fellowship, a professional development and networking program for mid-senior level non-profit, faith based, and governmental professionals serving Northern Manhattan —East and West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood— will celebrate the closing ceremony of their  9-month fellowship by awarding $10,000 in grants to 7 local youth programs on Thursday, November 19, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The City College of New York, Shepard Hall, Room 250, 160 Convent Avenue at 140th Street, Manhattan.

Seven grants ranging from $1250-$1500 will be awarded to youth programs selected through an RFP.  The grant winners are:

Maysles Institute- to introduce recently incarcerated and at-risk youth to documentary filmmaking and the ways they can use it address their own self-empowerment.

Fresh Youth Institute- to train 30 students to become empowered young leaders both personally and academically through a variety of academic and extracurricular programs.

The Dream Center/Classical Theater of Harlem –Harlem Shakespeare Initiative is a free six-week program designed to give students in Harlem an understanding of the language and foundations of Shakespeare and an opportunity to learn how to produce their own creative writing projects.

The New York City Mountain Bike Association – an introductory mountain biking program for teenagers in Upper Manhattan at Highbridge Park, the only mountain biking course in Manhattan.

El Museo Del Barrio- El Museo’s Youth Council offers hands-on experience in museum administration and cultural production to Latino youth, ages 16-20, from low-income communities of New York City, and in particular from East Harlem and the South Bronx.


America SCORES New York– America SCORES is the only youth development program that combines soccer, poetry, and service-learning curricula aligned with the Standards for English Language Arts, National Standards for Physical Education, and K-12 Service Learning Standards.

Save Our Sexy- a program that educates and empowers adolescents to create presentations on diabetes from their perspective and in a language they understand to help them be the agents of change for the adults in their lives.
