Today, Saturday, Council Transportation Chair Ydanis Rodriguez and other elected officials and transportation advocates will call on the City of New York to install pedestrian safety bollards along sidewalks in key areas with high pedestrian volume to prevent potential attacks in NYC.
Council Member Rodriguez is the sponsor of legislation currently in the City Council that would require the installation of bollards in front of schools, plazas and vision zero priority corridors, however, the call will be to begin installation now before the legislation works its way through the Council.
The heightened urgency of protecting pedestrians comes after Heather Heyer was killed by a white supremacist in Charlottesville last week with his car and in Barcelona on Thursday where 13 pedestrians were killed in a terrorist attack. This follows months of similar attacks, including one in Times Square in which an allegedly disturbed individual killed a young tourist before thankfully being stopped by a bollard.
Council Member Rodriguez will stand outside the Bank of America building on 42nd and 6th Avenue to highlight the extent to which these bollards can protect key areas, in this case a major financial institution. He will highlight why we should also be protecting children near schools, parks and cultural institutions, as well as heavily trafficked corridors in the city.
