As parents and teachers struggle with the decision of how to get kids back to school safely, WE ACT for Environmental Justice has introduced another free online learning modules for children in grades 6-12. Based on WE ACT’s Environmental Health and Justice Leadership Training program, this mini-lesson provides students – and their parents – with an introduction to the basic concepts of environmental health and how it relates to environmental justice.
“And our latest lesson, which focuses on environmental health, provides students with a framework to better understand the health inequities that have led to such disparate impacts of COVID-19 in communities of color.”
“Our online learning modules are a valuable resource to teachers and parents as they struggle to keep children engaged and learning safely during this pandemic,” said Taylor Morton, WE ACT’s Environmental Health and Education Manager and creator of the lessons. “And our latest lesson, which focuses on environmental health, provides students with a framework to better understand the health inequities that have led to such disparate impacts of COVID-19 in communities of color.”
Like our earlier module focused on environmental justice, this 15-minute video is paired with a worksheet for students and features case studies tailored to different grades. Both modules are available for free online at weact.org/mini-modules.
In addition to providing these lessons, WE ACT is working with New York State agencies and legislators to establish standards for climate justice education. As part of this advocacy, it will release a report later this year assessing the awareness and understanding of these issues among students across the state.
