Harlem-Based Chuck Allen III, Scholarship Fund Awards $1,500 To Tri-state Students

When Chuck Allen, III died in 2008 after a 26 year career politician in New Haven, CT. a scholarship fund was established for high school seniors…

… in the tri-state area who will study accounting, law, public administration
and public policy. Allen was Mayor De Stefano’s Special Assistant and oversaw
a number of affordable housing initiatives before working for the city.

Honorable Harlem New York City Council Woman, Inez Dickens spoke Sunday June 26th in New York City, at St. Philip’s Episcopal church awarding three scholarships in memory of Allen. Two high school students from New York Stacey Boulware and Emmanuela Fosu (first photo) as well as Aryana Colon (second photo) were given $500 unrestricted awards towards their freshman of college for Fall 2011. Dickens challenged the recipients to not only to achieve their academic goals but like Chuck Allen give tirelessly back to their communities.

“And when you have accomplished your goals we expect to see you back here involved and handing out checks to the next generation.” said Dickens.

The Senator Chuck Allen, III Scholarship Fund based in Harlem at St. Philip’s Episcopal church. The event was sponsored by the Sunday School and the St. Philip’s Federal Credit Union which was established in 1951. The scholarship fund has given a total of $3,000 in cash assistance to high school students since 2010. Over 100 attendees were present and a luncheon was served after the ceremony.
In 2004 Allen was featured in the New Haven Advocate for coming out of the closet after leaving CT. politics as he and his partner Tod Roulette an art dealer in Harlem prepared for a same sex blessing in New York at the Harlem St. Philip’s Episcopal church. They were also featured on a national PBS television program and in several magazines for their outspoken support of marriage equality.
