Full Steam Ahead With Teachers College’s Academic Festival

Underscoring its support for adding the arts to the nation’s focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Teachers College, Columbia University’s Academic Festival 2016.The Academic Festival 2016 will feature an opening keynote by Theodore Wiprud, Vice President of Education and the Sue B. Mercy Chair at the New York Philharmonic and other esteemed speakers for a daylong program of workshops, panels and discussions on Saturday, April 2, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., 525 W. 120^th Street (bet. Broadway and Amsterdam Ave.) Manhattan.

With the theme, “Full STEAM Ahead,” the Festival reflects Teachers College’s commitment to education and fostering of civic engagement and problem-solving abilities applicable to all disciplines, including the arts.

Wiprud, host of the NY Philharmonic’s Young People’s Concerts, kick’s things off with a keynote entitled “The Cultural Partner in Arts Education” at the 10a.m. opening ceremony, followed by a steady stream of eclectic speakers throughout the day, with highlights including:

• Olivia Hooker (Coast Guard’s 1^st African-American woman on active duty) and

• Dr. Irene Trowell-Harris (first African-American woman in history of the National Guard promoted to General Officer) discussing woman’s role in the military at 11:30 a.m.;

• Dr. Lori Custodero (co-creator of WeBop! at Jazz at Lincoln Center) exploring infusing the arts into STEM-focused education at 2:30 p.m.; and

• Christopher Emdin (author/award-winning educator) discussing his book For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood…And the Rest of Y’All Too at 3:45 p.m., among other speakers.

Teachers College’s eighth annual signature homecoming event, Academic Festival brings together more than 1,000 alumni, students, faculty, staff, admitted students and guests to dive deeply into recent innovations, issues and discoveries at the school in education, psychology and health. Academic Festival will include an eclectic lineup of breakout sessions with students, alumni and faculty representative of the College’s 10 academic departments.
