Fresh, Affordable Produce Comes From Harlem To Hollis Neighborhoods

June 14, 2024

This summer, NYC Health + Hospitals is making it easier than ever for New Yorkers to access fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables right in their own communities.

The public hospital system has launched a new season of farmers markets hosted at facilities across all five boroughs.

In partnership with local operators like GrowNYC, Harvest Home, and Uptown Grand Central, these outdoor markets bring the bounty of regional farms directly to underserved neighborhoods. From the Bronx to Brooklyn, Queens to Manhattan (Harlem), residents can now find an array of affordable, nutritious produce options just steps from home.

“Our farmers markets eliminate barriers to healthy food access while supporting regional agriculture,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “This is a vital resource for improving nutrition and preventing diet-related chronic diseases in the communities we serve.”In addition to cash, debit and credit, the markets accept a variety of payment options to increase accessibility. This includes EBT/SNAP, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons, and WIC vouchers. GrowNYC also offers its Fresh Food Box program year-round at NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter in Harlem, providing seasonal produce bundles at discounted prices.

The farmers markets will be hosted at 11 public hospitals and community health centers through mid to late November. Locations include NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, Lincoln, North Central Bronx, Kings County, Woodhull, Metropolitan, Harlem, Elmhurst and more.

In addition to the fresh food options, many sites will offer free cooking demonstrations, nutrition education resources, and the opportunity to meet the local farmers who grew the produce.”

Our farmers markets create a community space that connects city residents directly with the people cultivating the food they eat,” said Marcel Van Ooyen, President and CEO of GrowNYC. “That strengthens neighborhoods while supporting sustainable agriculture.”As COVID-19 exposed deep inequities in food access across the city, initiatives like these farmers markets have taken on even greater importance. By eliminating barriers and destigmatizing sources of food assistance, NYC Health + Hospitals aims to improve health outcomes and food security for all New Yorkers.

So this season, take advantage of having a farmers market right in your backyard. Stop by, stock up on fresh and affordable produce, and taste the difference local makes for your community’s nutrition and wellbeing.
