Back in September, Dave East dropped his terrific Kairi Chanel mixtape. Today (Jan. 30), the 2016 XXL Freshman shares the music video for the project’s opening track, “It Was Written.”
Throughout the four-and-a-half minute, Joe Puma-directed clip, the 28-year-old MC roams a rooftop in his native Harlem neighborhood. In another scene, East tells his story through ink and parchment on a giant, old-fashioned scroll, playing into the song title “It Was Written.”
Dave kicks off his verse by spitting, “Everybody keep telling me ‘make a club record’/You ain’t trapping no more, stop making drug records/You got a daughter bout to come, stop making thug records/I brought that money back fast, I had the plug flexing.”
He continues, “Welcome to Harlem, el Barrio, that’s the drug section/Hit your bitch with my jeans on, ain’t making love naked/I got love for my loco but I know cuz reckless/I ain’t gotta sleep in the projects, I did enough stressing/My father was a rolling stone but taught me one lesson/Do your dirt by yourself, your friends be the ones telling.”

In other Dave East-related news, the Def Jam artist recently linked up with Method Man and Max B for “Eviction.” Prior to that, Dave dropped his version of OT Genasis’ track for “Push It (EastMix).” And, before that, he put out his music video for “30 Niggaz.”
East is kicking off his European Tour in March. You can peep those tour dates below, along with the video for “It Was Written.” His major label debut album is dropping later this year.
