Congresswoman Robin Kelly Marks World AIDS Day By Promoting Testing From Harlem To Hollywood

December 1, 2017

Today, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust, released this statement marking World AIDS Day:

“The AIDS epidemic is a public health crisis that affects every American community and communities across the globe. For decades, this terrible disease has taken a massive toll on communities, especially communities of color. Thankfully in recent years, we’ve made historic progress and have an opportunity to finally end this epidemic for good – if we redouble our efforts.

We’ve come too far to backslide but tragically, we are seeing a disturbing increase in new infections, especially among African American women in the U.S. South.

I firmly believe that if we make a commitment now, we can see an AIDS-free generation within our lifetime. But only if we increase education, access to testing and get people into treatment.

This World AIDS Day, let’s each  of us commit to creating an AIDS-free generation. Personally, we can each take our health into our own hands and get tested. As a community and nation, we can continue pushing positive policies and programs that are successfully driving new infection rates downward.”
