December 25, 2020

Cheryl L. Duncan has been named to the Observer’s PR POWER 50 List for 2020.

The founder and CEO of Cheryl Duncan and Company Inc., the New York City-area public relations firm that has championed clients in the arts and culture, entertainment, and social betterment sectors for more than a decade, Duncan was included in the list for her leadership and innovation within the industry.

The eighth edition of the annual listing underscores the most influential public relations power players, many of whom are helping to make history.

“There are truly so many voices and stories — of Black, Latinx, women and other underrepresented communities — that matter to the deeper understanding of our global community. We are honored to be able to tell these stories and to be included in the company of so many industry powerhouses,”

A noted PR specialist with decades of experience, Duncan founded her firm in 2005 with a mission to bring to the fore clients and projects representing the best in film, literature, theater, and social justice.

A Howard University graduate and Jackie Robinson Foundation alumna, Duncan has been the guiding force behind the public image of many premier institutions and nonprofits in the New York metropolitan area and beyond, having represented National Black Theatre in Harlem, the New York City Korean Parade, Sejong Soloists string ensemble and more.

In addition to managing her own firm, Duncan served for many years as lead consultant for the Terrie M. Williams Agency where she directed campaigns for, among others, the late music legend Prince, Alex Haley’s ROOTS: The 30th Edition, and pioneering Black soap opera star Ellen Holly.

She also was a part of the team behind the successful Rock & Roll Hall of Fame bid for jazz titan Miles Davis.

Duncan has also represented the Essence magazine and the Essence Music Festival.

In 2020, the boutique agency has handled the launch of African Film Festival, Inc.’s first virtual New York African Film Festival; helped Black Public Media mark its 40th anniversary and publicized its new fellowship opportunity with MIT OpenDocLab; and assisted viewers stuck at home in finding musical escape with the Emmy-nominated Discovery Orchestra’s televised interactive concert, Discover The Firebird.

Their continuing work with client WORLD Channel helps bring to light the breadth of diversity of the nation through series such as America ReFramed, Stories from the Stage, and Local, USA.
