Two icons of R&B music, Babyface and Usher, are set to be honored at The Apollo Theater in Harlem during its annual Spring Benefit on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
This prestigious event will recognize Babyface with the inaugural Legacy Award and Usher with the Icon Award, highlighting their profound impact on the music industry.
Expressing his gratitude, Babyface remarked, “I am humbled to receive the inaugural Legacy Award from The Apollo. For nearly a century, the theater has stood as a beacon of excellence in Black entertainment. To have my legacy recognized by The Apollo is truly amazing.”
Similarly honored, Usher conveyed his excitement, stating, “It’s a tremendous honor to receive this award from such an iconic institution in New York City—one that has paved the way for countless prominent artists. I am humbled to be this year’s recipient and eagerly anticipate celebrating with everyone.”
The event, commemorating the Apollo’s 90th anniversary, promises a memorable evening featuring a special appearance by Big Daddy Kane, with additional star-studded performances yet to be announced. Renowned musician Adam Blackstone will serve as the musical director, ensuring a spectacular showcase of talent.
All proceeds from the Spring Benefit will support The Apollo’s year-round artistic, educational, and community programs, continuing its legacy of fostering cultural enrichment and talent development.
The festivities will commence with red carpet arrivals at 5:00 p.m., followed by the benefit concert and awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m. Attendees can also look forward to an exclusive afterparty curated by event designer and Apollo board member Bronson Van Wyck.
Adding to the excitement, Babyface will be inducted into The Apollo’s Walk of Fame on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. ET. This prestigious accolade includes a plaque installed under the theater’s iconic marquee on 125th Street, joining a prestigious list of past inductees such as Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, and Mary J. Blige.
Together, Babyface and Usher boast an impressive collection of 20 Grammy Awards—12 for Babyface and eight for Usher. Babyface was also honored with a trustees award from the Recording Academy in 2021. Furthermore, Big Daddy Kane’s Grammy win in 1991 for his contribution to Quincy Jones’ acclaimed “Back on the Block” album underscores the caliber of talent being celebrated.
Adam Blackstone, recognized for his outstanding work, clinched a Primetime Emmy in 2022 as music director of The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. Usher, who headlined the record-breaking 2024 Super Bowl halftime performance, is poised to make waves at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, with nominations set to be announced on July 17, 2024.
