May 4, 2016

Saxophonists Renè McLean and Gary Bartz meet to celebrate the music of jazz legend Jackie McLean. For more than five decades Renè served as protégé/apprentice to his father, the world-renowned alto saxophonist and educator Jackie McLean. For twenty of those years, he served as the musical director to the many ensembles Jackie and Renè co-led. He began his musical training at age 9 studying with his father and with Sonny Rollins. As an adolescent, he was performing with local jazz, R&B, calypso, Latin and other bands of varied musical traditions, making his debut with Jackie’s band in the early-1960’s. His career has included performances or recording with many of the major figures in jazz like his special guest for this tribute, Gary Bartz. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear these masters and this sextet playing the music of Jackie McLean.
