Café Photovoice: The Sequel highlights the strength and resilience of individuals navigating mental health and addiction recovery, by providing a powerful platform for storytelling through photography.
“A safe place. Where I have been going, talking to counselors from an early age of 14, not realizing how this world can be so mean. Being thankful for all the advice. Always trying to do right. Right by others and myself, not staying stuck on myself. Emma Bowen, a place I got knowing and all I have to do is keep showing…to my groups, staying in the loop. It’s better than drinking every day and sitting on the stoop. Just pray for me…as I pray for you.” – Miguelina Jaquez, one of the artists.
“… explore the powerful connection between their recovery, well-being …”
Café Photovoice is a reflection of the lived experiences of individuals engaged in treatment at the Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center in Harlem for mental health and addiction treatment. Over three weeks, participants came together twice a week to explore the powerful connection between their recovery, well-being, and surrounding environments. Through the lens of the Photovoice methodology, participants used photography from their own perspectives.
Through art, poetry, and the powerful influence of hip-hop culture, these participants not only build a sense of community but also highlight the beauty and resilience of underserved communities, bringing visibility to what is often overlooked.
This second collaboration between the Bowen Center, Adelphi University’s School of Social Work, and Photovoice Worldwide, exemplifies how participatory action research can empower individuals to share their journeys authentically.
Significantly, participation has more than doubled since the initial 2022 exhibition, reflecting the growing impact of this important initiative.
The new exhibition features thirty (30) new images and stories in English and Spanish, which can be viewed here.
