Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, her long career and accomplishments, were celebrated by her dear friend, Judith Pisar.
In her art filled loft-like apartment, high above Fifth Avenue, Judith raised a toast, “Barbaralee, you never cease to amaze us. Your new book, your 24th book, comes out at a time when we really need to be recasting our way of thinking about everything. That is what we are here to do this evening—to celebrate, to look forward, to look for new ways to grow and to evolve and figure out how to be the best and most giving citizens we can be in an increasingly challenging and difficult time.”
Editor Diamonstein-Spielvogel’s Beyond Architecture: The NEW New York marks the 60th anniversary of the New York City Landmarks Law, featuring new essays by Vishaan Chakrabarti, Justin Davidson, Andrew Dolkart, Thomas Dyja, Paul Goldberger, Adam Gopnik, Michael Kimmelman, Guy Nordenson, Nat Oppenheimer, A. O. Scott, Lisa Switkin, and Rosemary Vietor, exploring the future of this city’s historic preservation.
“I admit I’ve known Judith longer than I admit to being old, and like all fine things, our relationship has only deepened with time.”, offered Barbaralee, “I’m profoundly appreciative of your interest and efforts, and I thank each and all of you for coming here tonight.”
The room was filled with the cultural elite of our city including almost all the new book’s authors, as well as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Irish Repertory Theatre Kathleen Begala, Executive Director of the Friends of the High Line Alan van Capelle, Head of US Office of the Musée d’Orsay Aurelie Cauchy, Secretary to the Governor of New York Karen Keogh, author Michele Gerber Klein, Judith’s daughter, Leah Pisar, and her son Jeremiah, Former President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Emily Rafferty, Director of the Research Libraries at New York Public Library Brent Reidy, Former United States Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin, Former First Lady of New York Silda Wall Spitzer, and many more.
A special treat, Pisar introduced Zhu Wang, a pianist from Young Concert Artists, who played works by Mozart, Shubert, and Chopin, and concluded the performance with “New York, New York,” a tribute to Barbaralee and to which all the guests joined in singing.
