Join the Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee Festival that starts with Black Girl. Black Girl is an American family drama Based on a stage-play written by J. e Franklin. The film tells the story of a young girl who defies the low expectations thrust upon her by her family and pursues her dream of becoming a dancer. According to Melvin Donalson, in Black Directors in Hollywood, the film explores issues and experiences of Black womanhood in the ’70s, and highlights that “intricate and sometimes painful connection between mothers and daughters.”
