Becoming A Polyglot: 3 Most Important Habits

April 7, 2021

If you want to become a polyglot, you’re probably prepared for dealing with quite a few challenges.

However, learning several languages doesn’t have to be as hard as it seems. John Tolkien, one of the most famous polyglots, knew 35 languages – and some of them, he learned just for fun.

The key here is to remember that every language is a system – when you find out how it works, getting to know the vocabulary will become the only challenge that you will have to face. And the more languages you know, the easier it will be to learn new words, because many languages are connected.

If you’re only taking your first steps on the road to becoming a polyglot, take a look at the list below. These helpful habits should make learning languages much easier for you!

Do It Regularly

When you decide to learn any language, you should do that regularly. If you were to take French lessons for a month and then suddenly stopped, most probably, you would forget everything very quickly. Consistency has several important benefits.

  • You do not have enough time to forget the material.
  • You easily connect new information to the one you have already learned.
  • You do not get to lose motivation by making long breaks.

Set a schedule depending on your skills and preferences, and commit to it. Do not set your target too high or too low. For example, you should be able to study for 15 minutes every day, and that will still be enough to make consistent progress.

Pair Language Learning with Another Activity

Make language learning fun! This way, you will not get bored. For instance, download a podcast in another language, watch films and tv-series with subtitles, or make colorful flashcards. Choose something that suits you, and enjoy the process!

Set a Goal

Ideally, you should set a goal that will help you stay motivated to learn the language, such as being able to hold a conversation with a native. If you are losing motivation, remind yourself of your aim. Additionally, you might want to consider writing a journal to track your progress.
