The Bayard House at 110th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues at the beginning of the last century East Harlem, New York. It’s a lithograph by Hayward, NY for Valentine Charming mid-19th century issued New York in 1864.
This type of color lithographic printing process was very laborious, involving long-apprenticed, highly trained by hand artisans. It also involved challenging hand-operated machinery, inking of stones, sheets of paper individually hung to dry, skill, patience, and other endless tasks and labor. Because of these and various other factors, this old printed leaf is an interesting original collectible artifact from a long past moment in printing. The sheet has a uniformly and gently age-toned but mostly clean fresh, top blank margin trimmed narrow — overall still quite an appealing Harlem collectible visually despite any small age flaws seen or visible.
In all, it remains a charming antique old vintage printed image any collector, dealer, person of taste or institution would be pleased to own.
