Artist Lisa Cain Is At “Home” In Harlem With New Work At The Heath Gallery

March 27, 2023

Heath Gallery presents a new show by Lisa Cain “Home”, at 24 West 120th Street, Harlem, New York, in association with Rafael Gallery.

The exhibition has been curated by Wade Bonds. The exhibit will be on view April 1- 23, 2023 with the opening artist’s reception set.

This is Lisa Cain’s first New York City exhibition. Lisa Cain, Ph.D., is a celebrated folk artist, neuroscientist, anatomy professor, and award-winning educator and administrator from Canton, Mississippi.

The exhibit will feature a stunning collection of Cain’s figurative folk art and collage, highlighting Cain’s deep connection to the small-town African American community in which she was raised.

“Cain’s figurative art is characterized by vibrant color, pastoral settings, and stylized depictions of the human form. Her collage works by contrast are more muted, and feature vintage black and white photos and a color palette that reflects the rich and earthy colors acquainted with the deep South,” states Bonds.

Cain is currently Assoc. Vice President of Faculty Affairs and Development for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), Associate Dean for Professional  Development and Faculty Affairs, and Professor at the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry.

In 2022  she was named a recipient of the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion Lifetime Achievement Award for significant contributions to improving health outcomes in diverse communities in the state of Mississippi and beyond.

She has exhibited nationally and counts Viola Davis among her high-profile collectors.

Lisa will be at the gallery for the opening artist’s reception, on April 8, 2023, 1-6 pm EST writes Heath Galleries Saundra Alexis Heath.
