As part of its new church-wide initiative to address the growing economic disparities hurting so many U.S. citizens and threatening the nation’s future, The Riverside Church will host anti-apartheid leader and President of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, The Rev. Dr. Allan Boesak…… as a guest preacher during service and featured speaker for “Prophetic Voices,” a dynamic series promoting economic justice, on Sunday, March 16, 10:45 a.m. at the Church, 91 Claremont Ave. (bet. 120th & 122nd Sts.), Morningside Heights.
The Rev. Dr. Allan Boesak will deliver a sermon entitled “Look to the Slave Child” during service, which will be followed by a discussion exploring issues of economic justice and a special reception. Dr. Boesak is the first holder of the Desmond Tutu Chair for Peace, Global Justice and Reconciliation Studies, and founding director of the Desmond Tutu Centre for Reconciliation and Global Justice at Christian Theological Seminary and Butler University in Indianapolis. In 1983 he called for the formation of the United Democratic Front, which became the largest organized, non-racial anti-apartheid movement in the history of South Africa. Dr. Boesak is the author of 17 books, co-author and editor of four.
The Riverside Church (www.theriversidechurchny.org) is an interracial, interdenominational and international church built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1927. The 1,600-member Riverside Church in Morningside Heights has a rich tradition of providing a forum for important civic and spiritual leaders. Past speakers include: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President William J. Clinton, the Dalai Lama, Fidel Castro, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.
