The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) today released the following statement following last night’s failed to vote by the Senate to pass the legislation to protect voting rights:
We are deeply disappointed that the Senate was unable to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and blocked efforts to advance a procedural rule change that would have allowed this critical legislation to pass with a simple Senate majority vote. Both efforts had widespread popular support according to various polls and received significant support from the business community.
ASBN mounted a sustained campaign to demonstrate to key members of the Senate, particularly in AZ and WV, why American businesses rely on our democracy functioning and the need to protect our most sacred of rights. In a campaign spanning the past several weeks, ASBN, its members and supporters, including businesses in West Virginia and Arizona, voiced their concern because they know that without democracy functioning, the risk to businesses and our economy is existential.
While we are disheartened, we are not defeated and we will not be deterred in our effort to demonstrate the essential role democracy plays in a functioning, sustainable, just, and inclusive economy.
