Preserving a person’s legacy is crucial, especially in Black History, where contributions can be overlooked. By safeguarding these stories, we honor the past and inspire future generations.
Remember the YouTube video of the 102-year-old dancer seeing her younger self dance on film for the first time? Her video has over 40 million views to date, and has been featured on CBS Nightly News, NBC News, Times Magazine, Good Morning America, Washington Post & BuzzFeed.
Before Alice Barker became famous for this Youtube video, she was just an old woman living in a nursing home with stories to tell and a history to share.
Alice Barker was a well-known African American dancer during the 1940s. A house dancer at the legendary Cafe Zanzibar, Alice also performed in all of the exclusive Manhattan nightclubs with musicians including, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and all the greats!
She made her television debut in the 1960s, dancing with Frank Sinatra on his television show, The Frank Sinatra Show, making her one of the first African American dancers to perform on television with a white man.
The new single, Who Do You See? explores Alice Barker’s life experience. It captures Alice’s New Orleans roots while encompassing the rhythm & blues genre that digs deep into her feelings of being forgotten and her hopes of wanting to be remembered-even just by one person. Who Do You See? also represents a strong belief Alice had -everyone deserves to be seen.
This single introduces the musical project about her life, entitled ‘Hidden in Plain Sight: The Story of Alice Barker. This Project shares the trials and tribulations Alice faced before and after becoming famous. The music video provides a mini synopsis of the project. The inspiration for this project comes from a promise made to Alice of continuing to share her story.
