A$AP Rocky pulls the trigger on the cinematic video for “Phoenix,” the latest release off his debut Long.Live.A$AP. Lord Flacko conveys a beautiful dark love story in the Francesco Carrozzini-directed clip starring “The Wire’s” Michael K. Williams and supermodel Joan Smalls.
After a late night out, the couple comes home and an argument ensues. In a fit of rage, Smalls tears up the house and pulls out a gun.
“This is one of the more serious songs on my album, so people are really expecting something cinematic from this video,” A$AP told MTV News. “They don’t expect the average…me with my gold teeth and swag, it’s just really about a life message.”
The song is about reincarnation. “It’s all about living, and ‘Phoenix’ is being reincarnated through your own ashes, so it’s just more of a serious note,” he explained.
