This week, the Harlem/Havana Music & Cultural Festival – an international visual and performing arts, fashion, education and culinary exchange kicks in.
The Festival continues its celebration of the rich artistic connection between the iconic cities of Harlem and Havana with special musical and dance performances, Cuban-inspired dining, and more throughout the city.Renowned Cuban performers, including pianist, Jorge Luis Pacheco; saxophonist, Cesar Lopez; and the all-woman Afro-Cuban dance troupe Obini Bata will be featured performers at a host of venues throughout the week which culminates in day-long celebrations on Saturday, August 19 – Sunday, August 20, 2017, as part of the annual HARLEMWEEK festivities.
Highlights of this week’s line up include today’s kick-off for the Harlem/Havana Culinary Initiative in collaboration with internationally renowned chef and restauranteur Marcus Samuelsson, where 12 restaurants in and around Harlem will offer a Cuban-inspired dish and cocktail on their menu. Tomorrow will be the kick-off of the popular Harlem/Havana International Photo & Art Exhibit, a free event where works from Cuban, Harlem and Dominican artists will be on display as well as works from private collections including the Center for Cuban Studies. Also tomorrow, the all-female folkloric Cuban based dance and drumming ensemble Obini Bata will hold a dance workshop at the famed Dance Theater of Harlem.
