In preparation for the 2017 Harlem Adult Education Conference (HAEC) on Saturday, November 4, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Teachers College, Columbia University.
In addition, the HAEC Steering Committee is accepting high-quality, question-based workshop proposals from members of Harlem’s adult-education community, including adult-education instructors, learners, administrators, and researchers.

Conference Overview
The primary goal of the Harlem Adult Education Conference (HAEC) is to facilitate the community-based exchange of tools, strategies, and research among members of Harlem’s adult-education community in order to build stronger connections and expand learning opportunities.
The theme of our 2017 conference, “Raising Awareness, Building Public Support for Adult Education in Harlem,” focuses on the importance of helping all Harlem stakeholders, including policymakers and funders, understand and value the vital contributions of quality adult-education services to the educational, social, and economic development of our community.
NOT YOUR ORDINARY CONFERENCE
Workshop facilitators are the very heart of the Harlem Adult Education Conference. Instead of lecture-centered sessions in which the presenter’s sharing of expertise is the focus, HAEC workshop facilitators encourage interaction and peer-to-peer learning, ensuring all participants meaningful opportunities to both offer and acquire useful, solution-oriented information.
Workshops are scheduled for 90-minutes and must include small and/or full group discussion, and provide adequate time for participants to learn from each other through role playing, games, reflective writing or other interactive activities.
In the spirit of collaboration, leadership development, and non-hierarchical learning, we encourage prospective facilitators to consider including one or more adult learners as co-facilitators.
WORKSHOP CATEGORIES
Proposed workshop topics must be structured around an inquiry-based question in one or more of the following categories:
- Adult Literacy/Adult Basic Education
- Citizenship/Civic Preparation
- College and Career Readiness
- Digital Literacy
- English for Speakers of Other Languages
- High School Equivalency (HSE) and Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) Preparation
- Policy Development and Advocacy
WORKSHOP CRITERIA
The Harlem Adult Education Conference Committee welcomes proposals that:
- include interactive activities related to our 2017 conference theme: “Raising Awareness, Building Public Support for Adult Education in Harlem”;
- are designed to facilitate discussion and problem solving around specific questions in the field of adult education; and
- answer completely all questions in the online proposal-submission form; and
do not promote specific commercial products, brands, or institutions.
