As the world prepares to ring in Air Max Day in just a few short hours, Champs Sports decided to get an early start on the celebration by hosting a ‘Game On Air’ in-store event today March 25, 2017 at retail locations in Harlem and also Atlanta.
While the ATL event was hosted by DJ Khaled and featured live artwork by Dubelyoo, here in NYC we were treated to a live painting by the equally talented Jay West. As a native to the Harlem area, West relied on the inspiration he receives daily from the neighborhood and put it directly into his art piece. Here’s what he had to say about it himself when we caught up with him in between brush strokes:
This piece is inspired by the community of Harlem — its flashiness, its love, its passion and its strength more than anything. It’s a neighborhood that’s changed a lot throughout the years, but it remains a place with heart and soul.— Jay West, artist
With DJ M.O.S handling the turntables, and even a few BMX riders coming through to land a few tricks outside the store, the day ended up being the perfect “pre-party” for tomorrow’s 30th Anniversary celebration of the original Air Max 1.
