A stunner of a home in Hamilton Heights just hit the market with a $5.5 million price tag, making it the most expensive single-family home for sale in the neighborhood. If it sells for the full asking price, it could become the most expensive home sold in Harlem, period—the current record-holder, a $4.95 million townhouse on Convent Avenue, sold last January.
The spectacular building was once a church, but after it was gutted by a fire, according to Harlem Bespoke; a developer acquired the property in 2013, and has spent the past few years renovating it into the home we see today.
And what a home it is: This particular house is referred to as “The Mansion on Hamilton Terrace” in brokerspeak, but that descriptor isn’t too far off: it measures nearly 5,000 square feet, and occupies the corner lot at Hamilton Terrace and West 144th Street. It has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and—according to the listing—“fine modern living in a remarkable historic district.”
A shortlist of the home’s attributes includes a basement rec room with a billiards table and a wet bar; a wood-paneled library with, yup, another wet bar; several gas fireplaces; a landscaped backyard and a roof deck with Harlem views; and original details like pocket doors, dormers, and the gorgeous terracotta and limestone exterior.
All in all, not too shabby—and while the price seems high for the neighborhood, it’s worth considering that a home of this size and caliber would surely command a heck of a lot more just a few miles south.
