columbia-baseball-in-harlem1Go Columbialions reported today that last month, members of the Columbia baseball team met with students involved with Harlem RBI, a year-round youth development non-profit organization.

A group of 50 ninth graders from Harlem visited Columbia’s campus with admissions and participated in a panel discussion with senior Kyle Bartelman, junior Harrisen Egly and first-year Jack Harlan in the Lou Gehrig Lounge. The trio talked about their backgrounds, interests and spoke about what it is like to be a college-student athlete.

At the end of the panel, there was a Q&A session where the group asked questions from their favorite baseball teams to why they chose Columbia.

“It was a great opportunity for myself, Harrisen, and Jack to share our student-athlete experiences with the Harlem RBI program,” Bartelman stated after the event. “We were able to explain the importance of strong academics in the recruiting process and the factors that made Columbia such a strong fit for each of us. I hope the kids now have a stronger understanding of the Columbia student-athlete experience, and we hope to see them at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium later this fall.”

“It was a really good experience to be able to speak with the kids from Harlem RBI,” Egly added. “They were excited to learn about being a student athlete in college and what it takes to get to Columbia as an athlete. It was fun to just get to hang out with them for a bit and I hope they really got to learn something from the experience.”

“It was great getting to meet the kids and give them some insight on life at Columbia and baseball,” Harlan said. “I was thrilled to see so many young kids with a passion for baseball and softball, as well as an interest in higher academics. Seeing the kid’s smiles and love for the game made my day.”
