The Beauty And The Bed Bug At City College In Harlem

bed-bugCity College Center for the Arts (CCCA) presents “Microanatomie des Insectes” (Microanatomy of Insects), an exhibition of photographs by Damien Laudier. On view is a selection of prints emphasizing the rarely seen beauty of the complicated anatomy and structures of arthropods, including two of the city’s biggest nemeses: bedbugs and cockroaches. The prints were created between 2007 and 2016 by the artist using a combination of biological staining and photographic technique. The exhibition, guest-curated by Columbia University Director of Public Programs and Events Lamar Lovelace, runs September 20th through November 4th, 2016 at Aaron Davis Hall.

Arthropods are invertebrate animals having a segmented body, external skeleton and many joint and legs—spiders, insects, centipedes, shrimp, crabs, and more. Laudier chose insects as his subject due to his work in histology—the study of microanatomy—as well as his enduring fascination with biology and photographic art. His early interest in microscopy led to a career in forensic science, and evolved into working in a variety of other biological fields including entomology, neurobiology and paleontology.

“I want to introduce people to the beauty and perfection of the arthropod microstructure,” said Laudier of his photomicrographs (photographs of microscopic images).  “My work allows people to see insects that they are familiar with, in a completely new light.”

The photomicrographs are rarely seen except by scientists. Using up to 1000x magnification, Laudier welcomes the scientist and non-scientist alike into the complex and complicated anatomy of insects.

“The intricacy and detail of Mr. Laudier’s work not only reflects his extensive scientific knowledge but also his high level of skill in his craft,” said CCCA Managing Director Gregory Shanck.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
