acr crash in harlemA car thief sporting a Superman button was hospitalized Wednesday after he crashed a stolen minivan during a police chase in Harlem, officials said.

The minivan had been left idling with the keys inside on Amsterdam Ave. near W. 180th St. when the thief jumped in around noon and took off.

Cops alerted to the theft saw the minivan roll by on W. 100th St. and West End Ave. and tried to pull the vehicle over. The attempt sparked a short pursuit that ended when the minivan ran into traffic on Broadway and Lasalle St.

“Cars were stopped at the light and he couldn’t get through,” said one witness, who would only identify herself as Michelle, 28. “Cops ran over to the sides of his car and he almost ran them over. He went in reverse and one cop almost got dragged under his car.”

The thief, whose name was not disclosed, frantically tried to free himself from the jam, putting the car in drive and reverse as he pingponged into the cars surrounding him as well as a transit pole, police said. He also struck an MTA bus, witnesses said.
