On Thursday, June 16th, 2016, refugees from 64 countries, including Mexico, Cuba and Honduras celebrated with officials from the Refugee Resettlement Office of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New York and the East Harlem community.
The Archdiocese of New York and the Harlem community discussed their journeys to the United States and the obstacles they had to overcome in honor of World Refugee Day. The celebration took place at the Target East Harlem Community Garden at 415 East 117th Street.
Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, the head of Catholic Charities, said,
“New York City remains an important place of settlement for refugees from around the world. From their stories, we learn about hardship and perseverance and what we as a city and community can and must do to help them adjust to their new homeland.”
