New York City Council has passed legislation that requires all publicly accessible single-occupant bathrooms to be gender neutral, reports DNAinfo. The bill, passed on Tuesday, will require institutions to remove gender-specific signs from their single-occupant bathrooms and replace them with signage that appropriately indicates they may be used by all.
Sponsored by Councilman Daniel Dromm, the bill passed 47-2 and is awaiting Mayor Bill de Blasio’s signature. In a statement, Dromm declared, “Most New Yorker’s take their unfettered access to bathrooms for granted. Yet every single day, transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals must grapple with the fact that their choices may lead to harassment or worse.”
The new bill will go into effect on January 1, 2017. Single-sex multiple stall restrooms will not be affected.
