Here is a snapshot of a southbound Trolley car and a man on a bicycle riding on Broadway crossing 122nd Street in West Harlem, 1919.
The Trolley car passes the bicyclist as it runs down an empty Broadway dirt street with the inlaid trolley tracks.
The photographer boldly stands in the middle of the street to take this photo while being sandwiched by Columbia University on the left and a row of apartment units to the right.
This is an interesting period in Harlem’s history when the trolley cars, automobiles, and horse-drawn carriages were on the street at the same time and without traffic lights, no wonder people were getting hit all the time.
In hindsight, it makes sense that the #1 subway train runs in the center of Broadway – quite an amazing feat of construction and design.
