September 28, 2015

“Memories ReflectionsThe Countee Cullen Branch, The New York Public Library located on 104 West 136 St hosted the works of NCA members and guest artist presenters to explore and display the themes of “Memories & Reflections”.

The exhibition will run from its debut, September 17 to October 25, 2015 with an Artists talk and closing October 24th at 2 to 4 pm. Curator Ed Sherman, NCA Board Member imagined this collection to showcase the diversity and evolution of  NCA artists and it community.

Aesthetically the artist ranged in mediums and with an emphasis on the manipulation of paper. Artist Wilhelmina Grant piece entitled “Carp Diem” displayed just that. Ushering in gentle waves with “Carp Diem” protruding from its frame with billowing swirls of enchanted tapestries it swims. Delving deep into subconscious folds of waves it beckons Neptune to quiver and trident to lay down in submission.

Deborah Singletary noted for her authentic folklore and mysticism accomplishes the duality of memories and reflections with “Music to my Ears”. She takes one on a prolific journey of revelry, delights, matriarchal power and the eternal cycle she weaves an illustrated story of nature as a forthright entity heralding the majesty of family and community.

Anne Tansley transformed an original oil works into paper entitled “The Catch” and the depth nor was intrinsic value not lost. Her lens eye experience of the fisherman working in tandem went past the grueling work but united a sense of purpose. The wide berth of the canvas gives a wondering sense of lucid memories to the bounty of the hunt and the labor that binds it.

Elemuel D. Richards, photographer, illustrator and graphic artist piece “Escape” contorts memories and reflections with stylized fonts merged into human silhouettes heaped onto on another ascending towards a greater purpose.

The collection boasts a wide array of artist whose careers have been in a constant state of evolution. The contributing artist are: O’Neal Abel, Fani Miller Beard, Herb Bennett, Kwame Braithwaite, Lenore Browne, Derick Cross, Jim Edmonds, Ramani Edmonson, James Fair, Wilhelmina Grant, Jimmy James Greene, Kim Hamilton, Jannette J.
