On June 21, 1990, Nelson Mandela joined ABC anchor Ted Koppel at City College in Harlem on 135th Street, for a historic town meeting before an over-capacity audience at Aaron Davis Hall.
The discussion took place a few months after Mandela’s release from 27 years of imprisonment in South Africa as a leader of the country’s anti-apartheid movement. In these two videos of the event, Mr. Mandela addresses questions on issues such as the degree of U.S. support for his country, its economic future, and the territorial struggles between Israel and Palestine.
