Sherry Turner DeCarava, an independent art historian and Executive Director of the DeCarava Archives, offers an in-depth portrait of the life and career of this influential artist and complex man.
As part of the Schomburg’s Visually Speaking series, Turner DeCarava invokes her 40-year personal and professional partnership with DeCarava for this discussion on her husband’s artistic legacy, his continuing relevance, and inspiration to the multiple currents of photography today. Photojournalist, Ozier Muhammad, will join Turner DeCarava in conversation after the lecture.
Roy DeCarava (1919-2009) was one of the great pioneers of twentieth-century American Art. He has influenced generations of image-makers and profoundly shaped our understanding of the people and places he photographed and expanded the esthetic possibilities of the silver gelatin medium he embraced. Throughout his six decade career, DeCarava created photographs that emboded a rich, aesthetic world of sense and thought—-extraordinary moments made visible in light and darkness. Through his black and white hand-printed photographs he discovered a masterful evocation in infinite tonalities of grey.
