Watch renowned communications strategist, author and mental health activist Terrie M. Williams, on “CNN Newsroom” with Brooke Baldwin at 2:30 PM (EST) and “CNN Tonight” with Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota at 10:00 PM (EST) as she speaks about the growing number of people suffering from mental illness and depression-and copycat suicides –Today, Wednesday, August 13, 2014.
Depression affects everyone differently. Not all people experience the same symptoms, but there are some tell tale signs that are very common. If you recognize that you have, or someone close to you has been experiencing some of the symptoms (i.e loss of appetite, loss of concentration, overwhelming sadness), don’t ignore them. Give voice to your feelings and speak up. No one should, or has to, feel this way.
Anyone can experience depression, regardless of race, gender, age, income-there are no barriers. Depression can rob an individual of enjoyment found in daily life and can even lead to suicide. Myths and stigmas that surround depression create needless pain and confusion. It keeps people from getting the necessary and proper treatment to enable them to heal.
After surviving a debilitating bout of depression, Terrie chronicled her struggle to regain her health in magazine and the feedback was staggering. It led her to write the book Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting. Terrie has a B.A. from Brandeis University and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University in West Harlem.
