Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) will host a series of program events, beginning with a free hardhat “pop-up” exhibition open to the public for the first time at the 1885 historical landmark firehouse (120 E. 125th Street). ”The Spirit of El Barrio: Past, Present and Future” will take place on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 11AM-12:30PM.
Leading up to the start of renovations later this year, this special exhibition will feature the works of artists Adrian Román, Edgardo Miranda, Manny Vega, Oliver Ríos, and Yasmin Hernández. Some of the artwork will incorporate Augmented Reality technology (virtual visuals), providing a small preview to one of the future opening exhibitions of CCCADI supported by the New York City Cultural Innovation Fund: The Rockefeller Foundation. CCCADI will also have special guest artist from Puerto Rico, Edgardo Larregui, live painting during the exhibition.
With capital support from Senator Bill Perkins, Senator Kevin S. Parker, Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, New York City Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, The Mayor’s Office (through the Department of Cultural Affairs), The Ford Foundation, New York Community Trust, American Express/National Trust for Historic Preservation/Partners in Preservation program, Housing Preservation and Development and Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, CCCADI will renovate the decommissioned firehouse into a state-of-the-art cultural center that will celebrate the diversity of African Diaspora cultures that has made El Barrio an important culturally historic community. Located at 120 E. 125th Street, the 1885 Landmark building will soon feature gallery space, community performance space, and host workshops and educational programming. The newly renovated facility will also allow CCCADI to expand its programs by providing conference areas and multi-use space for diverse educational and community programs.
This event is also made possible with the assistance of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, New Harlem East Merchants Association, Positive Workforce, Giscombe Realty, Stadium Red, donations of images from the Museum of the City of New York, project consultants Denham Wolf Real Estate Services, Inc. and design firm CSA Group.
El Barrio is filled with a rich cultural history that has made significant contributions to the cultural life of New York City. Home to generations of migrants and immigrants that have transplanted their cultural traditions to New York City, the East Harlem community represents the dreams of many generations committed to a better today and tomorrow. Capturing the stories that make El Barrio unique is integral to the work of CCCADI.
