New York Cares, the largest volunteer network in New York City, today announced the launch of its 36th annual Coat Drive with the goal of providing 85,000 warm coats to New Yorkers in need this winter.
In addition, the 2024 New York Cares Coats+ fundraiser aims to raise $1,000,000 to distribute brand new winter coats and fund essential programs that help break the cycle of poverty. This year, New York Cares is building on last year’s historic partnership with We ❤ NYC and all NY Sports leagues and teams and returning with a city-wide campaign to collect and distribute warm winter coats and support initiatives that bring companionship, dignity, and financial stability to New Yorkers facing isolation and hardship.
The inaugural Coat Drive was held in 1989 as the city’s first centralized initiative to collect and distribute warm winter coats across the five boroughs. It has since helped more than 2.5 million New Yorkers find warmth. Last year alone, New York Cares collected and distributed over 73,000 coats and served more than 300 schools and non-profit organizations.
Promotion of the Coat Drive will be amplified by the NYC Sports Coalition, which includes the major leagues and New York region teams: Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League, National Women’s Soccer League, Women’s National Basketball Association; Brooklyn Nets, NJ/NY Gotham FC, New York City FC, New York Giants, New York Islanders, New York Jets, New York Knicks, New York Liberty, New York Mets, New York Rangers, New York Red Bulls, and the New York Yankees.
The leagues and teams involved in the NYC Sports Coalition will be engaging fans and employees, promoting the coat drive on their digital and social channels at games and in their offices, and running their own coat collections to ensure every New Yorker who needs a coat, receives one.
“Everyone deserves a warm coat and the protection and security it provides. That’s why New York Cares has mobilized countless volunteers over the past 35 years to ensure that New Yorkers in need have a proper winter coat,” said Sapreet K. Saluja, Executive Director of New York Cares. “We are continuously amazed by the generosity this city shows for its fellow New Yorkers through the donation of a coat, a financial contribution, and the gracious act of volunteering. The Coat Drive brings together caring New Yorkers like no other initiative in our city.”
The 2024 New York Cares Coat Drive is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Sidley Austin Foundation, Wells Fargo, and the Amazin’ Mets Foundation.
New York Cares is teaming up with UPS, a global logistics leader, to collect coat drive donation boxes from dozens of locations across NYC and transport them to various New York Cares intake facilities.
As the Official Box Provider for the New York Cares Coat Drive, Piece of Cake Moving & Storage will be donating 6,000+ boxes to help collect coats around the city at drop off locations. As a returning partner Piece of Cake Moving & Storage will assist in transporting thousands of coats, as well as hosting mobile collections around the city in their pink trucks co-branded with New York Cares, helping spread warmth to New Yorkers this winter.
Additional partnerships include Vornado Realty Trust and New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
“The FDNY is honored to partner with New York Cares for its annual coat drive,” said Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker. “Our dedicated first responders do so much to keep New Yorkers safe every day, and spreading warmth is just another thing we can do to help that mission, especially during the holiday season. I encourage everyone to donate a coat to their nearest participating firehouse.”
How to Donate Coats
New Yorkers can donate gently used, freshly laundered coats at several public collection sites in each of the five boroughs, including FDNY Battalions, through February 28, 2025. The New York Cares coat drive map includes information regarding this year’s collections with exact locations, dates, and hours of operation.
Individuals and organizations can set up a coat collection or a virtual Coats+ fundraiser at newyorkcares.org/coats. Every $25 donation helps keep 10 New Yorkers warm and also provides essential volunteer programs that help break the cycle of poverty. All donations are tax deductible.

Since 1989, the New York Cares Coat Drive has collected over two and a half million winter coats for men, women, and children throughout the city.
