November 12, 2024

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner brought an influential life sciences, health and deep tech 60-member delegation to Innovation Triangle-West Harlem to meet with a group of the top research.

For-profit and not-for-profit biotech and life sciences leaders for a power lunch and symposium hosted by the Janus Property Company and JP Morgan Asset Management at their recently-completed purpose-built Taystee Lab Building in the heart of the Factory District.

For this first-time Harlem visit, Mayor Wegner explored opportunities for collaboration between Berlin-based innovation leaders and the many leading institutions and companies based in Innovation Triangle-West Harlem. The delegation’s interest in Janus Property’s Factory District reflects the growing appreciation of Janus’s commitment to growing a walkable urban campus fostering creativity in all STEAM-related areas, tied closely to its neighborhood.

“We were honored to welcome Mayor Wegner and his delegation to West Harlem. This connection to Berlin marks an unprecedented opportunity for international collaboration in life sciences and innovation and follows our recent cooperation with similar London-based private and public sector leaders,” said Scott Metzner, Principal of Janus Property Company.

Jerry Salama, Janus Property Principal, adds: “This visit not only underscored West Harlem’s growing importance in New York City’s economic landscape,

but also brought new potential for partnerships that can propel both cities forward in healthcare, technology, and economic development.”

Wegner’s visit was the first time a major German political figure has come to Harlem for such a formal platform, highlighting the area’s increasing innovation significance on the global stage, in addition to its long-standing cultural significance.

Janus Property’s ultramodern buildings serve as a hub for innovative research and development in the fields of biotechnology, medical research, and pharmaceuticals. By bringing together scientists, researchers, and innovators, Janus, Columbia University, the City College of New York, the Advanced Science Research Center, and the New York Structural Biology Center are highlighting West Harlem as the key neighborhood in New York City’s growing innovation future.

Berlin is a key global economic hub known for its dynamic startup ecosystem, drawing entrepreneurs and investors from around the world. The city is a center for innovation in technology, life sciences, and green energy, with strong government support and venture capital activity driving growth. As Germany’s capital, Berlin also serves as a critical link within the European Union’s economy, with a skilled workforce and robust infrastructure that support its competitive position on the global stage.

This unique opportunity to introduce the world’s top thinkers in their respective fields will foster dialogue about expanding New York City’s and Berlin’s important roles in global innovation. It also underscores the importance of public-private-community cooperation in neighborhoods like West Harlem, creating a model for economic development.

The event took place on November 11, 2024, with lunch and remarks before touring Jerome Greene Lab Building, CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, New York Structural Biology Center at Taystee Lab Building, 450 W. 126th Street, West Harlem, New York.
