Notify NYC Travel Advisory From Harlem To Hollis, New York

The NYC Emergency Management Department has issued a travel advisory for Friday, August 9th, 2024.  

New Yorkers are advised to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential severe thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service forecast, more widespread heavy rainfall and potential severe thunderstorms are anticipated tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Peak rainfall rates between 1 and 2 inches an hour will be possible. Storms tomorrow may cause widespread minor flooding across the city, along with localized instances of flash flooding, that may result in disruptions to travel and transportation, particularly during the evening commute.

Periods of heavy rain may cause flooding in the city, including highways, streets, and underpasses, as well as other poor drainage areas and low-lying spots.

During periods of heavy rain, seek higher ground or, if in a basement, move to a higher floor.

City agencies have taken action to clean catch basins and remove street litter in the event heavier rain occurs.

Heavy rain may create dangerous travel conditions:

• New Yorkers are advised to limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather.

• If you must travel, exercise caution. Do not drive your vehicle or walk into areas where water covers the roadway as the water depth may be too great to allow you to cross safely.

• If you are outside during a thunderstorm, avoid open areas and try to seek shelter indoors.
