A Team Up Years In The Making: Deadpool & Wolverine Review (Video)

There’s no debate that Marvel movies have been on a decline after Avengers: Endgame concluded the Infinity Saga on a high note.

At this point, they’re on their last legs to bring their fans back to theaters. The character of Deadpool has always been a wild card among superheroes. Though a popular character, his storylines are aimed more towards adults than children due to the violence and adult humor. The real question is: “Does Deadpool and Wolverine save the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)”?

My answer is: The movie is fun, but No. Marvel still has some ways to go.

The film is the third installment in the Deadpool film series and the 34th film in the MCU. This time Deadpool is pulled out of retirement by the TVA (Time Variance Authority) and teams up with a reluctant Wolverine to save his universe.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman return to play their iconic characters respectively. They both prove that they were born to play them. They undeniably have great chemistry. Their dynamic is comparable to a buddy cop movie where one is the serious cop, and the other is the comedic cop. Watching their personalities clash figuratively and physically are some of the best moments in the film. Hugh Jackman who supposedly retired from playing Wolverine after his character died in 2017’s Logan, still shows he still has it after 24 years of playing him.

Where the film becomes a mixed bag is the plot and the cameos. There are a lot of cameos and references throughout. It gets to a point when it feels very “fan service”. I won’t spoil any, but you will recognize characters from past superhero movies that date back to the late 90s and early 2000s. Back when 20th Century Fox had the rights to them. Understandably it will feel like a love letter to the fans as well. The story doesn’t make sense at times. The Multiverse concept has been overused in superhero movies. A few exposition scenes try to explain things, but they’ll add something new to the concept and later might ask yourself: “How does that work”?

Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corbin serves as the film’s main villain. She may not be well-known among casuals, but she is Professor X’s twin sister in the comics. As a character she’s interesting, but I wish she was more fleshed out as a villain. Her motivations weren’t justifiable. The film has a secondary villain, TVA agent Mr. Paradox, played by Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen, who performs comedically, making him more fun to watch.

Overall, Deadpool and Wolverine is the movie you’ll have the most fun with this summer this two-hour cameo fest is inarguably worth watching in the theaters. It’s not groundbreaking, but it brings what fans want in a Deadpool movie. The violence is over the top and the humor does not hold back. It even takes shots at Marvel and Disney. Hugh Jackman has moments that bring heart to the movie. Also, let us appreciate that we got to see these two characters together again done right in a live-action film after the failure of 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, so if this is the final Deadpool movie, it’s a well-done trilogy.

Final Notes: This superhero movie is NOT for kids. It already broke the record for the Highest R-Rated Opening of All Time Both Domestic and Worldwide.
