Rep. Espaillat Commemorates 12th Anniversary Of DACA, Advocates For The American Dream And Promise Act

June 15, 2024

Harlem Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Deputy Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), issued a statement today.

The statement celebrates the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, urging Congress to pass the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act.

“… enhancing our neighborhoods and adding to America’s rich diversity.”

“Twelve years ago today, the Obama-Biden administration introduced DACA to protect young immigrants from deportation who arrived in the U.S. as children,” said Rep. Espaillat. “Dreamers were about seven years old when they came here through no fault of their own. DACA allowed them to live, attend school, and become vital members of our communities, significantly contributing to our economy. Today, DACA recipients are teachers, doctors, lawyers, first responders, business owners, and essential workers, enhancing our neighborhoods and adding to America’s rich diversity.”

“Even though DACA has helped over 800,000 Dreamers, some politicians want to dismantle the program to advance their political agendas,” added Rep. Espaillat. “These attacks have caused significant uncertainty and stress for Dreamers and their families. Dreamers deserve a path to citizenship and the stability it provides. The American Dream and Promise Act, endorsed by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, would offer a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders (TPS), and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients.

“… America is their home.”

“I am proud to join my colleagues in celebrating this historic program and pledge to always protect Dreamers, TPS holders, and DED recipients from political attacks, because America is their home.”
