Join seven-time Grammy®-winning saxophonist Paul Winter for the 29th Annual Summer Solstice Sunrise Celebration in Harlem, NY.
The event is set for 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 22nd, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street, Harlem, NY.

The Paul Winter Consort will debut “Adventures in the Universe,” a new musical journey inspired by composer Charles Ives’ visionary yet unrealized “Universe Symphony.” Winter explains, “Our aspiration is to utilize the Cathedral’s extraordinary acoustics to create a soundscape that might awaken in listeners a sense of the vastness of space and time.”
Special guest Jeff Beal, renowned jazz instrumentalist and composer best known for his Emmy-winning score for Netflix’s House of Cards, will join the Consort for the first time, playing the flugelhorn. Beal’s flugelhorn will complement Winter’s soprano sax, accompanied by the harmonic tapestries of Brazilian pianist Henrique Eisenmann and organist Tim Brumfield.
“Summer Solstice marks a pivotal moment in the year when the sun reaches its peak and days are filled with the promise of life’s fullness,” says Winter. “Ancient cultures gathered at Stonehenge to witness the first rays of the summer sun, celebrating the sun as the source of life and good fortune. Here in New York, we gather in another stone forum, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Over the years, our quest has been to experience this turning point in a new way – through the miracle of listening rather than seeing.”
Why 4:30 a.m.? Winter explains: “Awake in the pre-dawn darkness, as birds begin to sing and the Earth readies to greet the Sun, it feels as if life is starting anew. There’s a magic in this pristine time, free from our usual patterns and obligations. This feeling inspired our Summer Solstice Celebration.
“We begin in total darkness at 4:30 a.m., embarking on a continuous musical journey. Midway, listeners will notice the gradual illumination of the Cathedral’s great stained-glass windows, as light merges with sound to welcome the dawn of summer.”
