A proposed rate hike by National Grid for downstate New York customers has sparked renewed calls for the passage of the NY HEAT Act.
Jessica Azulay, Director of Alliance for a Green Economy, criticized the proposal, highlighting the need for the Act to provide relief for struggling residents.
“The National Grid rate hike underscores the urgency for the NY HEAT Act’s full passage,” Azulay said. “New Yorkers deserve cleaner heat and lower bills, both of which the Act delivers.”
The NY HEAT Act aims to improve protections for low-income residents who face energy insecurity. The legislation would also eliminate subsidies for gas system expansion, reducing costs for everyday New Yorkers.
The proposed rate hike, currently under review by the Public Service Commission, includes nearly $5 billion in gas infrastructure investments. These investments, according to Azulay, could be reduced if the NY HEAT Act empowered utilities to offer cleaner and more cost-effective energy options.
The impact on residential customers could be significant. Brooklyn residents who use gas for heating could see monthly bill increases of over $70 over the next three years. Non-heating customers would also experience substantial hikes.
The burden is particularly concerning considering the existing energy affordability crisis. Thousands of downstate National Grid customers are already behind on their bills. The NY HEAT Act proposes solutions like energy efficiency programs and bill discounts to address these challenges.
“As budget negotiations conclude, passing the NY HEAT Act is more crucial than ever,” Azulay concluded. “Three years of delay have cost New Yorkers dearly. Further inaction will only worsen the situation.”
