With the introduction of drones, and many retailers offering same-day delivery services, getting things delivered right to our doors is becoming easier and easier.
Now, Amazon and CVS are sharing insights about their new medication delivery services.
Amazon will launch same-day pharmacy deliveries, first in New York and Los Angeles, and then in more than a dozen cities across the country later this year.
Similarly, CVS offers on-demand delivery – within three hours – as well as one- to two-day delivery for prescriptions at many of its locations nationwide.
Amazon’s same-day deliveries
Amazon Pharmacy has launched same-day delivery offerings in New York City and Los Angeles. The goal of the program is to ensure consumers receive the medications they need most as quickly as possible.
Amazon will transition to smaller-format fulfillment centers which will house medications for some of the most common conditions – high blood pressure, the flu, diabetes, and more. These locations will be able to fill orders much faster than larger-format fulfillment centers, getting consumers their prescriptions faster.
The new same-day delivery feature will be possible thanks to a combination of drone deliveries and AI. Some fulfillment centers will also have robot arms to assist in filling orders, labeling them, and preparing them for same-day delivery.
Similarly, AI will work to do a lot of the preparation for orders, which will then be confirmed and finalized by pharmacists before getting shipped out.
“By bringing Amazon Pharmacy’s deliveries into our existing world-class logistics network, Amazon is building the fastest and most convenient service for the home delivery of prescription medications,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores. “These faster delivery speeds will be a game changer when you or your family need your medications quickly.”
CVS offers different delivery options
CVS has also adopted several new delivery options for consumers’ prescriptions.
Once prescriptions are called into your local CVS pharmacy, customers can opt for one- or two-day delivery on their orders. Delivery is available at thousands of CVS locations across the country, and consumers will be able to access their specific delivery options once they’re checking out in the CVS app or on the website.
Consumers can also opt for same-day delivery, which ensures prescription delivery within three hours of placing orders. While all delivery options come with an added fee, members of CVS’ ExtraCare Plus rewards program get all prescription deliveries for free writes Consumer Reports.
“We continue to evolve our delivery options to meet patients’ needs and offer several convenient and flexible delivery options to patients in all 50 states and Washington D.C.,” the company said.
