Grubhub, Oyate Group and the New York State Latino Restaurant, Bar & Lounge Association today announced the launch of “Rising Restaurateur: A Community Grant Program.”
“Rising Restaurateur: A Community Grant Program,” is launched to provide $200,000 in microgrants and business development opportunities to New York City Latino, Black, Indigenous, Asian American and/or Pacific Islander restaurateurs.
“I am thrilled to see the launch of the Rising Restaurateur program that will uplift Black and Brown owners of restaurants and bars and help them maintain and grow their establishments,” said Sandra Jaquez, president of the NYS Latino Restaurant, Bar & Lounge Association. “This partnership between Grubhub, the NYS Latino Restaurant, Bar & Lounge Association and Oyate Group is exactly the type of support our members need to help strengthen and maintain their neighborhood businesses and shows the power of community collaboration. We are excited for this opportunity and encourage all of our members to apply.”
New York City restaurateurs of color, including owners of brick-and-mortar establishments, food trucks and carts, can apply for microgrants of up to $10,000 to uplift their businesses. Businesses with demonstrated financial need will be prioritized. Selected participants can also access business development opportunities through the Bronx-based anti-poverty nonprofit, Oyate Group.
“Minority-owned restaurants in New York City are not just the backbone of our local economy but of our communities as well,” said Tomas Ramos, president, CEO and founder of Oyate Group. “Restaurateurs of color exemplify the diversity that makes our city unique and keep that incredible diversity alive through cuisine. This partnership aims to cultivate their business successes, support their staff and ensure sustainability for their restaurants. It is a great honor to partner up with Grubhub and the New York State Latino Restaurant, Bar & Lounge Association to make a difference in the lives of diverse culinary entrepreneurs.”
Rising Restaurateur is a partnership between Oyate Group, a Bronx-based nonprofit with the mission to alleviate poverty across New York City, Grubhub, the iconic online restaurant takeout delivery service, and NYSRBLA, a nonprofit organization founded to create opportunities for Latino and minority businesses to succeed in the food and beverage industry. Oyate Group and Grubhub have pledged to continue funding the program annually until 2026.
“At Grubhub, we believe in the power of food to connect communities,” said Brett Swanson, head of Community Affairs at Grubhub. “The Rising Restauranteur program embodies our commitment to supporting the New York City restaurants while helping break down barriers to minority-owned businesses. Through our partnership with Oyate and the NYSRBLA, we’re not just investing in the success of Latino, Black, Indigenous, Asian American and Pacific Islander restauranteurs in New York City, we’re investing in the soul of the city itself.”
To participate, restaurateurs must be Latino, Black, Indigenous, Asian American and/or Pacific Islander, based in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens or Westchester County (Mt. Vernon and Yonkers), operating as a single business with 30 or fewer employees and have a revenue of $2 million or less. Members of the New York State Latino Restaurant, Bar & Lounge Association are encouraged to apply, as $100,000 of the funds are dedicated to NYSRBLA members.
Applications are open now from Friday, March 1, 2024 to Tuesday, April 30, 2024. To apply, please fill out this live application.
Rising Restaurateur is a continuation of Oyate Group’s sustainable and holistic initiatives to empower small businesses and entrepreneurs across New York City. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Oyate Group secured and distributed over $200,000 in grants to small businesses in the Bronx that faced economic hardships, helping many reopen their establishments and preventing others from closing. Last year, Oyate Group launched Community Capital, a business incubator program for BIPOC entrepreneurs in the Bronx, Harlem and Washington Heights, offering founders up to $50,000 in investment capital and a 10-week mentorship program at the nonprofit’s headquarters.
