The NYC Emergency Management Department has issued a travel advisory for Tuesday, January, 9 to Wednesday, January 10, 2023.
New Yorkers are advised to prepare for heavy rain, strong to damaging winds, and moderate coastal flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued a citywide Flood Watch from 6 PM tomorrow to 12 PM Wednesday. 2-3 inches of heavy rain is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, which may result in widespread minor flooding of roadways and properties, including basements. Heavy rainfall is expected to end before the Wednesday morning commute, but residual flooding will be possible.
“A High Wind Warning is in effect …”
A High Wind Warning is in effect for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, with a Wind Advisory in the Bronx and Manhattan, from 6 PM tomorrow to 6 AM Wednesday. Winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected, highest along the coast. Downed trees and limbs with widespread power outages will be possible.
A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for south Queens from 5-9 AM Wednesday, with a Coastal Flood Advisory for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island from 5-10 AM Wednesday. 1-3 feet of inundation along vulnerable shorelines may result in flooding of properties, closed roadways, and flood-damaged vehicles, especially in Jamaica Bay.
During periods of heavy rain, seek higher ground or, if in a basement, move to a higher floor. City agencies have taken action to clean catch basins and remove street litter in the event heavier rain occurs.
Rain, windy weather, and cold temperatures may create dangerous travel conditions:
- New Yorkers are advised to limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather.
- If you must travel, exercise caution. Do not drive your vehicle or walk into areas where water covers the roadway as the water depth may be too great to allow you to cross safely.
