On December 8, 2023, at 11 a.m., NYC Public Schools Chancellor David C. Banks, NYC Chief Equity Officer Sideya Sherman, Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice Commissioner.
This includes NYC Kids RISE Founding Executive Director Debra-Ellen Glickstein, along with P.S. 92 alumna Amelia Adams and local leaders, will announce substantial funds raised for first and second-grade students citywide through the inaugural NYC Public School Alumni Community Scholarship at P.S. 92 Mary McLeod Bethune in Harlem. This initiative allows New Yorkers to directly support students in their former elementary school communities. The event marks the beginning of an annual tradition encouraging contributions to the college and career futures of students at their alma maters.
The inaugural class of NYC Public School Alumni Scholarships is contributing to NYC Scholarship Accounts for first and second graders in the schools they attended. During the announcement, P.S. 92 alumna Amelia Adams will engage with scholarship recipients, sharing her educational journey and career path to inspire their aspirations. This pioneering effort showcases how alumni can invest in students’ futures, serve as positive role models, and highlight diverse paths to success.
Through the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program, over 145,000 students, including nearly every first and second grader in NYC public schools and participating charter schools, have NYC Scholarship Accounts. Initial funding of $100 from New York City provides opportunities for additional contributions over time. In January 2024, around 65,000 kindergarten students will activate and view their NYC Scholarship Accounts.
Research indicates that a child with a college savings account is more likely to attend and graduate from college, emphasizing the impact of such initiatives. The event will take place at P.S. 92 Mary McLeod Bethune, 222 West 134th St, New York, NY 10030.
RSVP to ncoello@rubenstein.com or obourne@rubenstein.com, and photo ID is required for school entry.
