Chez Messy Opens In Harlem’s Washington Heights Neighborhood

November 14, 2023

As the name implies, Chez Messy, a new Latin and French-inspired tapas lounge, recently introduced its brand of hospitality to the thriving Washington Heights in Harlem, NY.

Located at 5 Edward M Morgan Place, a little-known street just west of 157th Street, Chez Messy offers a spirited ethos rooted in quality food, creative cocktails, a curated wine selection, music, and art.

The restaurant’s 2-story-high Industrial glass and wrought iron façade punctuated by floral accents give way to a dark and sultry 1200 sq ft restaurant, bar, and balcony wrapped in tin ceilings, antique mirrors and glass, antique hardwood floors, and plush fabrics.

The restaurant’s eclectic design aesthetic is somewhat whimsical with a flair for the dramatic, illustrated by vibrant murals hand-painted by artist Chris Rios, playful neon lights, and an array of chandeliers unevenly hung from the 20-foot ceiling.

Mismatched antique glassware and plateware add to the restaurant’s playful vibe. The intimate main dining floor seats 22 people plus 8 seats at the bar, with additional dining/lounge seating for 22 on the balcony floor. Seasonal outdoor dining accommodates up to 16 people.

“…curated wine selections and the restaurant’s signature creative cocktails…”

Chez Messy takes its culinary cues from the traditional Spanish tapas bar with added French influences, offering land and sea dishes designed to create an elevated, multi-course dining experience.

Menu highlights run the gamut from Pulpo a la Gallega (grilled octopus, rosemary garlic potatoes, capers, evoo, smoked paprika) and Coquilles St. Jacques (sea scallop gratin, mushrooms, tarragon, gruyère cheese) to Papas Bravas (fried “broken” potatoes, spicy pimento sauce) and Grilled Bistro Steak with chimichurri. Spanish meat and cheese boards also offer the perfect accompaniment to Chez Messy’s curated wine selections and the restaurant’s signature creative cocktails, including the Chez Margarita shaken with El Jimador, agave, lime juice topped with salted air, the El Maldito Negroni made with Hendricks, Attica Sweet Vermouth, Campari, Ancho Reyes, and garnished with a rose ice cube, and the Messy Manhattan made with Antica Sweet Vermouth, Amaro Ciciana, Woodford Reserve, orange bitters, Angostura Bitters, lavender syrup, and Luxardo maraschino cherries.

“Guests can look forward to additional musical and even magical entertainment.”

Live entertainment with the incomparable flamenco dancer Nélida Tirado is featured on Wednesday evenings from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM EST.

Dancers, a vocalist, and a Spanish guitar player accompany Nélida. Guests can look forward to additional musical and even magical entertainment.
