Spooky season has returned once again! The Cathedral of St. John the Divine’s annual Halloween Extravaganza returns to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve.
The event takes place on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 7 and 10 PM at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street) in Harlem, NY.
The Halloween Extravaganza is an Upper West Side tradition, begun decades ago under the unique direction of Artist in Residence Ralph Lee, founder of the Mettawee River Theatre Company. For 2023, the Cathedral continues Ralph Lee’s artistic legacy with an evening featuring the charmingly frightening Mettawee performers offering audience members an extra-special way to celebrate Halloween.
The evening begins with the screening of classic silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1921) directed by Robert Wiene, accompanied by organist Timothy Brumfield. Following the film, the Hell Mouth opens and goblins and ghosts fill the Cathedral for the Procession of the Ghouls, haunting each member of the audience with tricks and treats. Two viewings will be offered at 7 and 10 pm for all those in search of an evening with fellow ghouls.
More special tours and gatherings at the Cathedral are planned to celebrate the supernatural season. The Cathedral’s famous Crypt Crawls return in-person on Friday, October 27, ushering
visitors into the rarely-seen depths of the spectacular Gothic and maybe even haunted building. Rounding out the season, the Cathedral will commemorate the feasts of All Saints and All Souls with worship services and public gatherings, honoring the traditions of el Día de Muertos with ofrendas placed on altars in the Nave.
Halloween Extravaganza tickets are $40. For information on all of the Cathedral’s October
events and services, visit the Cathedral’s website.
The Cathedral
Over one hundred years ago, the trustees of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine conceived its mission to be a house of prayer for all people, an instrument of church unity, and a center of intellectual light and leading in the spirit of Jesus Christ.
Today, as the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its bishop, the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine serves the many diverse people of our diocese, city, nation and world through the worship of God; pastoral, educational and community outreach activities; cultural and civic events; international ecumenical initiatives; and the preservation of the great architectural and historic site that is its legacy.
